Stalking the Prettiest of Pretties

The Hen Do You WANT To Go On

You know how it goes, you are invited to a hen party and you dutifully purchase Ryanair flights to a random city, get the required logo’d t-shirt and appropriate ‘fun’ outfit, then go out in a series of dodgy pubs and bars that have doubled the price of their drinks because they are ‘hen party friendly.’ Oh, don’t forget that you have to drink all your (over coloured, over priced) drinks from the required willy straws. But what if you don’t want the same?

Well never you fear, dear reader, as we are in a new age of hen do. Banish the blow-up dolls and tell the feather boa to foxtrot off, classy and personal is the new cheap and tacky. Now you can have a bachelorette (as our American cousins call it) that actually reflects you, whether that’s a vintage tea party, a hands-on trip to a farm, or taking over from the boys and having an action-packed adventure day.

I also think it’s incredibly important that you consider going somewhere relatively local for your hen. I know most people want to go somewhere different, but a few towns along could offer everything you need. It could also work out cheaper in the long run. No, you may not benefit from the super cheap trebles that the random pubs in Warsaw offer, but there are more costs incurred in travelling than just the plane ticket. If you think about the trip to and from the airport, the parking, the food that you eat and bottle of water that you drink and the countless other little expenses along the way, it all adds up. By going local you can reduce the nights you spend away from home (you can still have a night of luxury if you want,) keep your friends with kids happy and support the local economy. Oh, and the random men trying it on will probably be speaking English. Can I get a whoop whoop?

Ireland has so many things to offer hen and stags. Along with the usual weekend on the beer in Kilkenny you can really just think of your ultimate weekend (or even just day or night) and plan it at home. If you are stuck for idea’s or aren’t the best planner in the world, you can even hire people to do it. Belles & Blazers is an Irish company run by the lovely Catherine which specialises in organised hen and stag do’s. They organise the accommodation, activities and even entry to the local club if you so desire. So handy for the maid of honour with no time to spare!

I was so excited when I saw the Crystal Maze option. I was obsessed with that show as a kid and will watch it any time I see the repeats now.  I’ve actually forwarded the details to my sister to store for future use when we eventually get married! Catherine told me that her personal favourite is probably the slumber party package. She says:

‘Pretend your 13 again, except grown up style! Enter into your own private function room that is tastefully decorated with Pink Hen Party Balloons & Bean Bags with pink throws.

You are greeted with a platters of tasty but oh so bad for you Finger food and to wash it down? Pink Bubbly of course. Get all comfy for the matinee of your favourite girlie flick, munch your way through salted, butter or toffee popcorn, maltesers and a chocolate fountain with marshmallows – Yum!

When that’s all over why not try your hand at Singstar on the Playstation and, if your up for it, a game of twister. A bar person will be at hand to help with “Refreshments” – it is thirsty work after all.

Now is the perfect time to do the Mr & Mrs Games in privacy and perhaps show a dvd of the hens life to date in pictures – finish the night remembering your sleepovers when you were younger.’

Sound Good? Yeah, I think so too! Considering the last girly weekend I went with my sisters we ended up in a room playing cards and reading my wedding mags. I am a true believer that you make your own fun.

Belles & Blazers offer packages and individual activities so you can go the whole hog or just pick and choose what you want and fit them around your own plans.

This isn’t the end of my chat on hens, I’ll bring you some more suggestions in the weeks ahead. For now, take a closer look at what Catherine offers.

**As usual, I’m not getting sponsored by this post. I just love finding new companies and showing them off!
